It doesn’t matter how much space a garage has, we always find a way fill it. We stuff it full of yard tools, riding mowers, old car parts, paint cans, toys, and more. Some of these items can be stored more efficiently. For example, Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Portland, OR recommends that you save garage space by installing a bike hanger.
Caution
Installing a bike hanger can be a big space saver, but you have to be careful when doing so. If you install it incorrectly, bikes can fall. This can lead to damage to the bike, your vehicle, or even injury to your kids.
Be sure to use a quality hanger system instead of going for the cheapest option. Use heavy duty hooks with rubber coating. The rubber will help prevent slipping, as well as protecting your bike against damage.
Make sure you take users into account when choosing your hanger system as well. If you’re hanging an adult bike, you can easily mount to the ceiling. If it’s kids bikes you’re dealing with, put it lower on the wall.
The Process
First, measure your bike. Determine the length so that you hang your hooks at the appropriate spacing. Weigh the bike as well to make sure you buy hangers that can accommodate its weight.
Next, choose your location. You need to make sure that it’s easily accessible and convenient. However, you also need to be sure the wall or ceiling will hold the weight.
If mounting to the ceiling, be sure the hooks are anchored to the ceiling joists. Use a stud finder to locate the joists, or look in the attic if you have one over your garage. Drill pilot holes through the ceiling into the joist. Then screw the hooks in securely.
Alternative methods
There are other hanger systems you can choose from that are either easier to install, more cost efficient, or both.
Folding wall mount
A folding wall mount can be installed closer to the ground. This makes it more easily accessible to children. Many of them also come with a shelf above the hooks. It can be very convenient for storing your equipment like a helmet or shoes.
Ceiling hoist
A ceiling hoist is a neat combination of advantages. It will store your bike from the ceiling. But you can reach it from the ground. Attach the hooks to your bike and then turn the crank to hoist it as high as you need!
Parking rack
A parking rack can be a good option if you’re worried about your kids being able to reach their bikes. It won’t really free up as much floor space as a hanger. However, if positioned properly, it CAN keep the bikes stored as out of the way as possible and make the best use of the space for a parked bike on the ground.
If you decide to save garage space by installing a bike hanger, you’re going to be spending some extra time in your garage for a few days.
