How to Handle Sticky Shelves in Your Garage

Do you have shelves in your garage that everything seems to stick to? Maybe you’ve painted the shelves and that hasn’t fixed the problem either. If you are dealing with that, the team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair of Atlanta, GA has a few ideas you can try.

Start By Cleaning the Shelves

When you clean the shelves in your garage, it is best to use a cleaner that can cut grease. If you run your car in your garage or start lawn equipment, everything in the room can become coated with a film. Over time, the film will collect moisture, dirt, and grime that causes your things to stick to the shelves.

If you plan to scrub the shelving, make sure to use a soft scrubber. You don’t want to scratch up the surface with something too harsh. You might even need to let the cleaner soak a bit so it can cut through the grease.

Consider Painting The Shelves

To help keep your surface clean, consider painting your shelves with a protective coat. You can apply paint that would be easier to clean than wood. If you have metal shelves, you might want to use an epoxy paint on them to give a new finish.

For wood shelves, we recommend you use an oil based paint. It provides a longer lasting finish than acrylic paints. If you are going to use an acrylic, then you should go with an acrylic enamel. It is easier to clean and lasts longer.

Apply Polyurethane on The Surface

You might consider applying polyurethane on the surface of the shelves to make cleaning easier. If you want to paint the shelves first, then allow it to cure for 24 hours. However, if you want to cover the existing surface, clean it well and then apply to coats.

Put a Paste Wax On The Shelves

A paste wax is another idea you might consider if you want to cut down on the stickiness. Before you apply, make sure you remove all dirt and grease as much as possible. Use a soft cloth to apply the wax. Let it dry for about 15 minutes and then buff it clean. Only use soft cloths for this application. You might need a second coat.

Whatever method you chose to protect your shelving, make sure you wait as long as the directions state for the surface to dry before placing your items back on the shelves. If you don’t wait long enough, you may end up with stickiness for another reason.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

positive reviews

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
