Garage doors are operated using a spring that counteracts the weight of the garage door while it is opening and closing, this spring is called a torsion spring and if it breaks your garage door will no longer open or close and you will need to replace the spring. You will need to make sure that you have the correct spring size for your garage door, once you have gotten the new spring it is now time to replace the old one.

Anytime that you are performing repairs to your garage door you should always practice garage door safety procedures and make sure that you are wearing the proper protective eye wear and use all the proper tools needed for the job.

Neighborhood Garage Door Services wants to make sure that you have the information that you need before you try to change the torsion spring by yourself. Here are the step by step instructions that will help you to understand how to change this spring.

Replacing The Garage Door Spring Yourself

By following these step by step instructions you will be able to change the spring with ease and without having to have a garage door specialist come out and replace the spring for you.

  1. First you will need to remove the two bolts that hold the spring to the bar, then remove the wheel from the end of the bar and wiggle the old spring off. Loosen the bolts on the new spring and then slide the new one onto the bar.
  2. Second replace the wheel back onto the bar and then reattach the spring bar back onto the garage door and tighten the bolts up on the new spring. Make sure that the bolts are tightened very well and snug.
  3. Lastly you will need to wind the new spring up nice and tight. Be careful as this part is very dangerous because if the springs start to come unwound it can cause serious injury.

Torsion Spring Replacement Trick

Knowing that winding the torsion spring is a dangerous task there is a trick that you can try, it uses the garage door as the winding tool. Wrap the disconnected cable around the wheel on the bar and then attach the cable to the garage door and place a vice grip on the bar on either side of the spring. Once you have done that close the door and it will wind the torsion spring for you without all of the dangerous work.

So once you have the spring replaced and wound and all the rest of the things reconnected and secured back in place again then you are ready to go. Neighborhood Garage Door Services of El Paso Texas wants to make sure that you are comfortable enough to be able to replace the spring on your own. However if you are not comfortable with changing ot yourself then you will need to call a professional to come out and replace it for you.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
