How to Paint Faux Windows On Your Garage Door

Do you love the look of windows on a garage door, but don’t want to invest the money in a new one? Why not paint faux windows on your existing door? Here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Hartford, CT, we love giving you DIY tips so you can have the home you love. Use this guide so that you can paint faux windows on your door.

Outline The Windows

To start with, you will need to outline windows on your door. Even if you have a steady hand, it is best to use tape. For a square style, you will need to use thin tape for the crossbars in the middle of the window. Use a wider tape for the outline of the outer edges.

We recommend that you use Frog tape for the outer edges of the window. Painters tape can work for the inside, but may not keep the paint from seeping through as well as the Frog tape.

Prime The Window With Grey Paint

Once you have the outlines of the window, you will need to prime inside of the tape lines. This area is what will look like the glass of the windows. Use a dark grey primer inside of the lines. Let the primer completely dry before going to the next step.

Paint the Glass Black

Go over the glass area with a dark black paint. Make sure you don’t get any outside of the tape. If you do, then wipe it up as soon as possible. You may need to go back over with a little bit of white to clean it up.

Make sure you purchase paint that is suitable for the outside. Do not go with an interior paint, because it will not last.

Pull Tape Off Immediately

It is best to pull the tape off while the paint is still wet. This keeps the tape from sticking to the door. Go ahead and reveal your new windows as soon as you can.

Add Hardware and Turn Your Door Into a Faux Carriage Door

You can go a step further and turn your door into a faux carriage door. You can order two handles that are installed in the center of the door. Also, you will need to order four long hinges to go on either side of the door.

Install one long hinge right under the window and the second right above the last panel of the door. This is a simple way to give your home a makeover for a small cost. The entire project may not cost more than $25 when it is done.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
