Many homeowners think that you have to replace your entire door when there is damage. However, depending on the condition of your entire door, you may be able to just get new garage door panels. Our technicians are able to determine what the best course of action for your repairs.
We put together a few signs that you might need to have your panels replaced. This is what you will want to look for.
Cracks in the Paint
If you have a painted door, the paint can start chipping away after time. Sometimes, the finish on the door can also wear out and expose the material underneath. You want to be sure that the protectant is covering the entire panel. Otherwise, you’ll end up with rust.
When the paint or sealant is chipping away, you can cover it with a new sealant. If the area is large, then you will want to replace the entire panel. But, if you catch it early enough, sealing it with an outdoor paint or seal will work.
Warped Wood
Wood garage doors are very beautiful, but they also have the problem of warping over time. Weather can be a huge factor in the wood becoming warped. When the temperatures go from extreme cold to hot, it will affect the material.
If you have a wooden door and one or more of the panels becomes warped, then you need to have them replaced. There is not a solution to warped panels.
Replacing a Wooden Door
Many of our customers decide to replace their old wooden doors with wood composite doors. This way, they get the beauty of the grain finish with the durability of the composite. Composite doors are made from a combination of metal and wood.
Dents
Dents or dings can happen to your garage door. Some of the reasons you may have these imperfection include:
- Backing into the door
- Toys or balls hitting the panels
- Bike running into the equipment
Whatever the reason you have the dents or dings, you should replace the panel if it is highly damaged. You can try and pull the dent out with the same type of tool you would use for a car. However, if the dent is too deep, then a new panel is in order.
The reason you will want to replace the panels when the dents are so deep is to keep the finish from chipping. Eventually, the dents will lead to chipped paint or finishes.
Bent Sections
Sections of your door can become bent from things hitting it. When that happens, your door will not close properly. You might see light coming in from the door jam when the equipment is closed. That’s a good indication that the assembly is not straight.
Bent sections can lead to:
- Improper function of the door
- Less insulation
- Chipping paint or sealants
To avoid greater damage, you will want to replace the panels as soon as you can.
