Have you ever wondered how garage doors are made by the manufacturing company? Here are the basics of the process.
How a Residential Garage Door Is Made
The typical residential garage door is made from four different panels. Each panel starts out as aluminum or steel. The side that shows outward is then covered in a protective coating.
From that point, these next steps are taken.
Texture is Printed
Many styles start by rolling out the metal to a thin sheet that has a printed texture on it. This is how your garage door has the textured look.
Design is Imprinted
It goes through a press after that to imprint the design of the door. Some are imprinted to have a raised section, while others have stripes, and some have no design at all.
Sheets are Cut to Width
Once the design and textures are on the thin sheet, the machines cut the sheets to the width of the door panels. Then the panel widths will have the edges bent inward in order to create the joints you see on your door.
Hot Glue Metal Plates
Metal plates are hot glued in place to the back of the sheet. This will be used later on to re-inforce the necessary parts for the door. These parts can include the handles, brackets, and more.
Two Sheets Are Slid Together
They take two sheets and slide them together to form a panel. There is an opening left between the sheets where insulation will be sprayed later on.
Close Ends With Blocks of Pine
The workers will slide in blocks of pine to close up the two pieces of metal. This way, no cold air can get inside of the panels.
Aluminum Bars Are Attached to The Panels
An aluminum bar is attached to long edges of the panels to help stabilize it for other parts of the manufacturing process. After the injection of liquid insulation has been sprayed, the bars will be taken off.
The insulation is a liquid that is designed to coat the inside of the panels and expand. Once it has dried, it will create a solid panel for the door.
Other Components Are Installed
After the panel is completely hardened, the workers will install the other components necessary to complete the assembly. This can be the weather stripping at the bottom or hardware.
Windows Are Cut Out
If they are creating a garage door model that has a window, they workers will cut out the rectangles or shapes of the windows that need to be installed. They will then install the type of window that is used for the design. The windows are usually double paned to ensure proper insulation.
A frame will then be placed around the glass window to keep it in place. This frame piece is available in many colors and can be customized to meet your specific needs.
