In 1804, Louis Bompart purchased his first plot of land, and the Gay and Marshall families soon followed suit. In 1919, the residents of Maddenville incorporated as a village to avoid being annexed with Maplewood, the neighboring town. It was in this year, Maddenville became Brentwood.

James Willingham, the first mayor, promised to clean up the area and eliminate the casinos and hoodlums that frequented the area. He did exactly that. In 1929, Willingham signed an ordinance which established Brentwood as a city.
