The history of Bellefontaine Neighbors begins in 1762, when the Louisiana Territory was relinquished by France to Spain. Spanish troops built forts on either side of the Missouri River, a trying experience since the ground was mostly sand and swamp. In 1800, the land went back to France and was purchased by the United States in 1803.
In 1804, a treaty was made with the Sac and Fox Indians, giving them a convenient place for a trading post and provided a safe place for small boats and canoes. A large, clear spring was nearby, and provided fresh water. It had been long called “la belle fontaine”, by the early French people.
