Barnhart, Missouri is located in Jefferson County outside of St. Louis, and wasn’t named until the early 1900s when the Frisco Railway was completed, bringing with it many new residents. Despite the many early settlers, it’s said that because Mrs. C.L. Barnhart donated some land to the Frisco Railway, the town was named after her and her family.
Surrounding the Barnhart land, was land owned by the O’Fallon family. In 1834, the nephew of Governor William Clark, Major Benjamin O’Fallon settled here with his family. Major O’Fallon lived in harmony with the area Indians, and was later appointed Indian agent for the Northwest Region, a position he held for over 30 years. O’Fallon’s Bluff was named for him.
One of Major O’Fallon’s sons, James, built his two-story home on Marriott Lane in 1860, and it still stands there today.
