The city is located in King and Snohomish Counties on SH 522, SH 527 and Interstate 405. In 1885, a settler from Pennsylvania, David Bothell purchased 80 acres on the north bank of the Sammamish River. The town’s first postmaster, who bought his property from Bothell, named the town in his honor in 1888. On April 14, 1909 Bothell was officially incorporated. The city is served by the Northshore School district and is home to both Cascadia College and the University of Washington Bothell.
