Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Stamford, CT has served a lot of homeowners over the years. As a result, we’ve been asked about almost every aspect of garage doors and their installation. So, we’ve put together a list of 5 frequently asked garage door questions we’ve been asked by you.
How Tall of a Door Can I Get?
Obviously, your garage door height is going to be limited by the height of the garage itself, but by how much? A good rule of thumb is that you need 14 inches between the ceiling and the top of the garage door opening. This allows for the track, carriage, and automatic opener to fit properly.
If you have a low garage ceiling and decide that you really need to maximize space, that can be done. We can install a double track system that reduces the space needed. This option will require just 6 inches of clearance from the ceiling to the top of the door.
What Size Opening Do I Need?
Your opening should be the exact width and height of the door you plan to purchase. Keep in mind that you’ll be using 2×8 or 2×10 facing board for the framing, depending on the depth of the opening. You don’t want any gaps between the door and the door frame.
Should I Get a Double-wide or Two Single-wide Doors?
If you plan on moving very wide vehicles or equipment, you may want a double-wide garage door. However, in most cases, you’ll want to go with two single doors. On a practical side, this gives you a backup in case one of your automatic openers fails. Aesthetically, it gives a more balanced look to your garage.
Do I Need an Insulated Door?
We usually recommend going with the most insulated door your budget can afford. An insulated garage door provides protection for anything you store in the garage other than your vehicle. In addition, it helps regulate the temperature in your entire home, saving you on energy costs.
If you live in a mild climate that experiences very consistent temperatures, you can get away without insulation. However, most areas have at least some times of the year with temperatures too hot or cold for the home. This is where you’re going to want to have that added layer of protection.
What’s the Best Kind of Insulation?
Garage doors are insulated with either polystyrene board insulation or polyurethane foam insulation. Polystyrene can be a cheaper way to go, depending on the thickness of the door. However, your best bet overall is to go with the higher R-value rated solution that is polyurethane insulation.
