What Kind of Garage Door Insulation Should I Have

There are many reasons to invest in a garage door that has insulation. Here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Sacramento, CA, we have some recommendations to make in regards to the type of insulation that you choose.

Choose the Correct R-Value

What is R-value? It is the standard in which the thermal resistance of different types of construction materials are rated. It will measure the amount of thermal conductivity that is capable of passing through a wall. This applies to both cold air or hot air. When you have a higher R-value on your insulation, it will keep the environment inside of your garage at a better climate.

Why Is Insulation Important?

Garage Door Insulation

Many residential homeowners use their garage to store their vehicles. This protects your vehicle from the elements. You may not think that insulation is that important, since many people store their vehicles outside with less problems.

The trouble comes in with the other things that you store inside of your garage. A garage provides a place to keep items that will not fit in your home. If you are storing seasonal clothing, decorations, or other household goods, insulation is very important.

Also, many people use their garage to store tools, lawn equipment, and other outside aids. These items are in need of good insulation as well. When your garage is insulated properly, it cuts down on the moisture and condensation that can get inside. If your area is not well insulated, it can ruin the other items that you are storing.

Two Different Types of Insulation

While there are several different brands on the market, there are two basic types of insulation that you can purchase. Either you will buy something that is made from polystyrene or polyurethane. Of these two types of insulation, polyurethane is the highest quality. It provides better thermal resistance than polystyrene.

Which Should Garage Door Insulation Should I Choose?

Garage Door Insulation R-Value 16

There are few things to consider when determining which insulation you should go with for your garage door. Consider these things when making your decision:

R-Value

As discussed before, the R-value should be taken into account when making a purchase. The higher the value, the better the material will insulate your garage. It is best to go with an insulation that has an R-value of at least 12. This is particularly important for areas that have harsh winters.

Should you go with an R-value of 16 on the insulation, you will find that the garage will not become as cold. Depending on the harshness of the winter, you may not have to heat the room at all. Obviously, those that spend a lot of time in their garages doing work projects may have this concern. If you do not spend time in your garage, then heating will not ever be necessary.

Reduce Electric Bills

The other reason that you should pay particular attention to the insulation you use in your garage, is that it directly affects your electric bills. This is, of course, if your garage is attached to your home. For those that have attached garages, insulation will affect your power bill.

It is best to go with an R-value of 16 to keep your garage at a better temperature during summer or winter. The insulation will keep the trapped heat and cold from entering your home.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
