Occasionally, you will have to reset your garage door opener remote or sync your opener to a new remote. To do this you will want to know what the Learn button on your garage door opener is and how to find it. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Seattle, WA has the information you need to know about the button and where to find it.

What is The Learn Button on Your Garage Door Opener?

The learn button is located on your garage door opener and is used to program new and old remotes, wall mounts, and keypads. It is also used to clear the memory of the opener. Clearing it will wipe out communication with all previously paired devices.

Depending on the make and model opener you have, the button could be either:

  • Red/orange
  • Green
  • Purple
  • Yellow

Each color has its own set of instructions on how to program new devices to the opener. You will need to look at the owner’s’ manual to get the specific instructions for your button.

Where is the Button Located on The Opener

The button is on your opener right above the antenna wire. That wire hangs above the motor head. Some models have the button located on the back of the unit. Others are located on the side. If you have a light on the back of your opener, the button will be underneath the light cover.

How to Open the Light Cover

To access a button that is located under the light cover, you will need to unhook the cover. Most of the time, the cover will hang from the opener on a hinge while it is open. On some units, the cover may come all the way off.

To open the light cover, you will need to locate the two buttons on either side of the cover. Press the buttons in to release the cover.

Use the Learn Button to Program New Devices

Once you find the button on your opener, you can use it to program new devices. If you get a new remote, install a wireless keypad, or wall mount, you will need to pair the two together.

Your opener should have LED indicator lights to communicate to you while you are programming the new devices. When you clear the memory on the opener, the LED will light up and stay that way for 30 seconds. Once it goes off, you know the unit is cleared out. Then you will need to push the learn button again to program it to the new devices.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
