Using Blown-in Insulation Above Your Garage

Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Raleigh, NC knows the importance of keeping your garage well-insulated against heat and cold. Many people don’t think about two very important places you need insulation: above and below. Here is how you can use blown-in insulation above your garage to help regulate the temperature inside.

Why Blown-in Insulation?

Blown-in insulation is a good alternative to roll insulation for a project like this. It’s a cellulose-based material that’s environmentally sound as well as easy to install. Cellulose insulation has a very high R-factor which makes it more efficient. It can also be a lot of fun to install and doesn’t cause as much skin irritation.

Seal Up The Space

You need to be sure the space above your garage is prepared before you install the insulation. Check for gaps and air leaks around vulnerable areas such as chimneys, ductwork, light fixtures, ventilation pipes, etc. Use expanding foam or caulk to seal up any bad spots you may find during your inspection. This will help prevent seepage of air into the attic/crawl space and provide better protection.

Get Your Insulation & Blower

You’ll need about 60 bags of cellulose insulation to cover every 1,000 square feet, so be sure to get a measurement of the space. To save a return trip mid-project, buy more bags than you’ve estimated since you can return unopened bags. Don’t forget to ask your home improvement store about free blower rental with a large purchase of insulation.

Get A Partner & Get Set

The insulation blower will consist of two main parts: the hopper and the hose. The hopper will need to sit outside with someone to monitor it and keep it constantly full of insulation. The hose should be fed into the building the most direct way possible to allow for as much slack as possible.

Lay The Insulation

Once you and your partner are in place, it’s time to start laying down the insulation. The hopper monitor needs to keep a steady supply of insulation going so that it’s about ¾ full at all times. Make sure to stay in communication with the hose operator so you know when the job is almost done. You don’t want to open up more bags of insulation than necessary.

The hose operator will start at the far end of the attic space and work their way to the door. Sweeping back and forth like a hose, lay down an even layer of insulation to a depth of about 10 inches. Be sure that you’re getting into all the hidden spots behind joists or around corners.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
