A major garage door repair that our customers deal with is broken torsion springs. This part is very important to your garage door assembly and needs to be taken care of the right way. As a word of caution, we do not recommend you change your own springs if they break for the sake of safety.
To keep your springs working longer, you can do general maintenance that will prolong their life. Since this is such a vital piece to your assembly, you need it to work properly.
Here’s what you can do for torsion spring maintenance:
Inspect The Springs For Rust
Since springs are a metal part, they are subject to rust. Rust can happen on your springs for a number of reasons such as:
- No lubrication
- Weather changing from extreme cold to extreme hot
- Old and worn out
- Too much moisture or humidity
These are some of the conditions that can cause your springs to have rust form on them. If you notice rust, then you will need to remove it.
How to Remove Rust From Springs
If you see the accumulation of rust, then you will need to remove it right away. Use a ladder to reach your springs. Take a stiff brush and gently brush away the rust. Once you are done, apply a water-based lubrication.
Be careful not to go too hard on the springs. Since this part is designed to hold tension, you want to be certain you won’t break that. If you break the tension on the springs, it will cause the door to become very heavy. The weight can break your assembly and fatal harm you.
Check For Spaces In The Coils
Look at the springs to see if there are any gaps or spaces in the coil. When you see these spaces, that means the springs are not able to hold the tension properly. At this point, you will need to have the springs replaced by one of our certified technicians.
Listen For Noises
Hearing noises in your garage door assembly is a problem. It should not be that loud when you operate your door. This is a sign that your springs are not functioning properly or some other part of the door.
A certain amount of noise will happen when you open your door. However, if it is a high pitched, screeching type of sound, then it is important to have one of our technicians come out and inspect your assembly.
Use Lubrication
Making sure that the track and springs are well lubricated is essential to a well-maintained garage door system. This is one of the top ways to increase the life of your springs. Otherwise, without the lubrication, your parts are exposed to the elements.
We recommend using a water-based lubrication. Do not use an oil based one, or it can cause build up to occur.
