We replace garage door springs all the time. It is a common part that ends up wearing out and breaking over the course of time. The springs are a very important part of your assembly, that must be maintained.
What Do Garage Door Springs Do?
You’ve no doubt seen the springs on your door. They are right above the doorway at the top. The function of this part is to create tension on the door. The tension is there to keep the weight of the door from being as heavy.
This is why we highly recommend that you do not replace your own springs. Since you will end up breaking the tension on the door, it will cause the full weight of the equipment to rest on the assembly. This can cause the entire door to fall and harm you.
Should You Replace the Part Before it Breaks?
It is best to replace most parts before they break. That is especially true of your garage door springs. Since it has such an important function on the door, it can cause significant damage to your door when it breaks.
When To Replace Your Springs
There are many reasons that you may want to consider having the springs replaced. Here are a few that you should be aware of:
Visible Rust
If you see rust forming on the springs, then you need to go ahead and have them replaced. The rust will weaken the part, making it susceptible to breaking. When we make the repairs, we always install long-lasting parts in place of the old one.
Gaps in The Spring
Look at the springs to see if there are gaps in the coil. If you are seeing spaces between the coils, that means it is not functioning as it should. The gaps can break the tension or keep it from being as tight.
There’s a Break In the Coils
Of course, if the spring does break, you need to make the repair. Do not attempt to use your door if the springs have completely separated into two parts. This can cause major malfunctions in your system as well as put you at a safety risk. Do not try to manually lift the door, either.
If You Haven’t Replaced it In The Last Several Years
Just to be safe, you should have the springs replaced about every 5 years. They may be good for longer than that, depending on your use. If you don’t use the door very often, you may not need to replace as quickly.
Our technician can come out and inspect the springs. They will give an honest opinion if the part needs to be replaced then or can wait. You might be able to make it for another few years if you don’t use the door real often.
