If your garage door springs wear out or break, they will need to be completely replaced. We are not able to repair a damaged or broken spring. Due to the nature of this part, it must be removed and replaced with a new spring.
We take calls from our customers on a regular basis for spring repair. They have a lot of questions about replacing their existing springs. Here are some of the questions we receive.
What Kind of Garage Door Spring Do I Have?
In general, there are two different types of garage door springs. You either have extension springs or torsion springs. Both have the same job, which is creating tension so the garage door will open and close with ease.
How do you know which garage door spring you have? You can look at the spring to determine if it is extension or torsion.
Torsion Spring
A torsion spring is a tight coil spring that is placed on the wall above the garage door. You should be able to see the spring from the ground. If you notice that the coils have gaps or that there is rust on the coils, it is time to replace it.
Extension Spring
An extension spring is attached to cables and a pulley system. When the door is closed, the springs are extended. When the door is closed, the coils tighten up. You will know you springs are extension springs if you see cables coming from the back of the garage door tracks.
Do I Need a Professional To Replace My Springs?
This is a question we get on a regular basis, “Do I need a professional to replace my springs?”. That is a great question! It is highly recommended the spring repair be done by someone that knows what they are doing. This is particularly true of torsion springs, because this part has been known to cause tremendous harm to a person.
When it comes to extension springs, we highly recommend you proceed with caution. While they are not as dangerous as torsion springs, they can still cause high concern for you. You must have a solid way to hold the door when you are changing springs. If you do not, then do not attempt to make this repair yourself.
How Much Does Garage Door Spring Repair Cost?
Our customers want to know how much this service costs. We will do the best we can to give an estimate on this type of job, but a true price needs to be given by a technician. When a spring breaks, it can cause other damage to occur to your assembly. The tech will need to do a full evaluation to provide you with an accurate price.
