Do you wish you had a playroom for your kids, but your house only has enough bedrooms for them to sleep in? Why not consider transforming your attached garage into a play area for them. It’s not as hard as you might think. In fact, this is the cheapest way to add another room to your home.
Here’s what you’ll need to make the garage a play space for your kids:
1. Weather Stripping For the Garage Door
Most often, your garage doors are not designed to insulate your space. If you can see light coming in between the door and the doorway, then you know you need to add weather stripping. This is a supply that can be purchased anywhere that sells hardware parts. Or, you can purchase it online.
Our technicians are able to come and add the weather stripping for you if you are unable to do it yourself.
2. Insulation For the Panels
You can purchase kits to insulate your door panels if you do not already have insulated doors. Another solution would be to install a new door that is well insulated. When you are looking for a new door, you should get a higher R-value. That is what determines how insulated it is.
We can come out and install all new equipment if you need us to. Also, we can handle insulation for you if you would rather keep what you have.
3. Heat and Air Solutions
In the winter you’ll need a solution to heat up your garage and in the summer you’ll need a way to cool down the room. If your doors are highly insulated, then the air won’t escape as much. You should take on the mindset that it is still a garage and that means there will be some limitations.
One solution for the winter is to use electric space heaters that can plug in. For the summer, you can run fans. If you have an outer wall, you can even install a window unit for the AC.
4. Furniture
We don’t recommend that you put top dollar furniture in your garage, in case weather conditions age it. However, inexpensive futons and chairs are a great idea for your room. You can even add a table and chairs for your kids to sit at.
5. Rugs
Put down some large area rugs so your kids can sit on the floor and without being directly on the concrete. You can roll out carpet and cover the entire area if you would rather, but a few area rugs will work if that is what you have. It makes for a cheaper alternative to full carpeting.
6. Storage Bins
To store toys and keep things organized, you will need a storage bin system of some kind. You might use a bookshelf to house small boxes for the smaller toys. Use a toy box for the bigger items. You might even install some cabinets or a wardrobe.
These are the things you will need to do if you want to turn your garage into a kid’s playroom. It’s an easy way to expand your home without doing major remodeling.
