Here at Neighborhood Garage Door Services of Toledo, OH, we want your home to be safe from intruders. Having a garage door can be a potential weak point into your house. Here are some things you should check to determine if a thief will easily enter your home.
Where Do You Leave Your Remote?
May people tend to leave their remote above the visor in their vehicle. Since this is such a common place to leave the remote, someone can easily find it. While the remote placement is not an issue while your vehicle is in the garage, it can be problematic when your car is parked outside of it.
Be sure to find a place where you can hide the remote. Do not leave your car doors unlocked, even for a few minutes. You don’t know when someone can take it while you aren’t watching.
If you have a glove box that locks, consider locking it inside of there. If it does not have a lock on it, it is best to find another place to store the remote. The glove compartment is the second place someone would look for the remote.
What Preparations Do You Take When You Go Out of Town?
When you go out of town, it is best to unplug your garage door opener from the ceiling. This will keep people from being able to easily open your door with a remote or the keypad. By unplugging the opener, you reduce your risk of someone opening it with the button.
Do not pull the emergency release on your garage door. Even though that will disconnect the door from being able to open it automatically, it will make it possible to open the door manually.
Reinforce The Emergency Release Lever
There is a way for a thief to use a coat hanger to pull the emergency release lever on your garage door. They can feed the hanger up through the top of the door and catch ahold of the rope. By gently pulling the rope, it will cause the emergency lever to release and allow them to open the door.
In order to keep this from occurring, you can use a zip tie around the pulley. There should be a hole where the rope feeds through that the zip tie can be placed. This will keep someone on the outside from being able to pull it open.
However, you will still be able to pull the emergency release when you need to. The zip tie is a good solution, because it will break when enough force is given.
Reinforce The Area Around The Door
Another area you should consider reinforcing is the area around the door. This can be done by nailing wood around the door jam on the sides and at the top. When you do that, it will make it harder for someone to get a crowbar or other tool in the door jams.
