Having an automatic garage door is a great convenience for a homeowner. The door can be opened by a garage door remote from the outside. If you need to reprogram your garage door remote, here’s the way you will be able to do that.
How to Program a Remote and Keypad System
If you have a keypad and a remote, then you will need to take these steps to program the keypad:
- Get a tall enough ladder to reach your garage door opener (it is usually located in the center of the garage)
- There is a button on the outside of the opener that says “learn”. Press and hold down the button until the light located next to it goes out. This will get rid of the old code from the memory.
- Push the learn button again and wait for the light to come on. Punch in the new code.
- Push the button on your remote and watch for the light to blink. That will show you that it has taken.
This should now be your new code for your remote and keypad.
How to Program a Garage Door Remote
If you have a remote that just has the button, then you will need to do these steps to reprogram it:
- Remove the cover on your remote control.
- Use a ladder to reach the opener that is located in the middle of the garage.
- You will see switches on the remote and the garage door opener.
- Create a new pattern with the switches that are identical to one another.
After you are done programming your remote, check it out to make certain that it works.
Why Isn’t The Re-programming Working?
There are several reasons that your remote may not work after you have re-programmed it. For one, if it is a new remote, it may not be compatible with the system you are running. Make sure that the remote you purchased can be used with the type of opener you own.
Another reason it may not have worked is that there are different steps that need to be taken to re-program the remote. The basic instructions do not work for every type of remote.
Basic Troubleshooting
You can do a little troubleshooting on your system if it is not working. Try these things to see if it will make a difference:
- Replace the battery
- Reset the remote
- Reset the opener
- Clean the eye sensors
It is possible that there is something that is wrong with the remote itself and has nothing to do with the reprogramming.
