It is not normal for your garage door to sound like a screaming banshee when it opens and closes. You will hear movement when it is in operation, but the squeaks, shrills, and shrieks are not normal. These sounds can be greatly reduced if you do these specific steps.
Tighten The Nuts and Bolts
The first thing you should do to help with garage door noise is to tighten up the nuts and bolts. This is an important part of maintaining your unit anyways. As the door operates, the nuts and bolts are going to loosen. That means that the panels and tracks will vibrate more than it should while in use.
Lubricate The Garage Door Parts
Another general maintenance project you should do is to lubricate the garage door parts. Use an oil-based lubricant like WD-40. This type of lubrication doesn’t attract dirt and grime, which can gunk up your parts and cause problems.
Start with the door closed, and spray lubricant on the rollers. You will need to use a ladder to reach some of the parts. Stand on the ladder and spray lubricant on the springs and inside of the track. You might even need to spray lubricant on your garage door opener chain. If you have a belt, skip this part.
Check Rollers For Damage
Worn out rollers or sprockets can cause a lot of noise on the tracks when the door is in use. The rollers will look worn out and shredded. If you have metal rollers, then you should definitely replace these with a nylon model.
Newer rollers will reduce the amount of noise you hear when you open or close your equipment. Our technicians can come and install new rollers for you without a problem.
Install Rubber Buffers
You can install pieces of rubber on the garage door opener that will help to buffer the sound when the door opens. The same can be done on the bottom of the door to keep the noise down when it closes.
Add Insulation To The Door
Insulating your garage door can reduce the noise that you hear when it is moving. It is important that you have at least an insulation strip at the bottom of the door if the entire things are not insulated. If the insulation is worn, go ahead and replace it.
Have New Springs Installed
The springs on your door wind up and create tension that takes the weight off the door. This keeps the equipment from slamming into the cement. If you notice that being a problem, then you likely need new springs.
Our technicians can come and install new springs for you. We do not recommend you do this installation yourself. Otherwise, you can sustain bodily injury. It is very dangerous to break the tension on springs.
Align Tracks
The tracks are the metal bars that the rollers sit in to lift and close your equipment. These parts can become out of alignment through daily use. Just like car tires make noise when the alignment is off, so do garage doors.
