If you have an automatic garage door opener, you will have a remote that operates the door when you push it. You may also have a keypad that opens your door. When one of these devices stops working, you may need to re-program it. If you get a new remote, you will need to program the remote to the unit. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Stamford, CT does this for our customers.

If you want to program your garage door opener remote on your own, here are the instructions for you to follow:

Locate The “Learn” Button on Your Opener

In order to program your remote or keypad, you will need to find the learn button on your garage door opener. This button is either square or circular. They come in four different colors, red/orange, yellow, green, and purple. Depending on which color your button is, you will need to follow different steps to program your remote.

The learn button is either on the back of the unit or the side. If you have a light on the back of your opener or on the side of it, then the button will be under the light cover. You will have to release the cover to locate the button.

How to Program a Green, Purple, or Red/Orange Button

If your button is green, purple, or red/orange, you should be able to follow these instructions to program it.

  1. Clear the memory on the opener- push the learn button and hold it. The LED will cut on. Wait for 6 seconds until the light goes off. That will clear its connection with your remote or keypad.
  2. Program the remote- Push the learn button and then release. Wait for the button to light up for 30 seconds. It should find the nearby remote and sync it.
  3. Program the keypad- if you have a keypad, then you will need to input the 4 digit pin you’ve chosen.

Test the remote and keypad to make sure that the programming took. If it doesn’t, repeat the steps again and test.

How to Program a Button That is Yellow

If you have a yellow button, either round or square, these instructions should help you. Start by clearing out the memory. You will need to go through these steps 2 times if you have a MyQ accessory, to fully clear the memory.

  1. Hold down the learn button until the LED comes on. It should stay on for 6 seconds and then go off. All remotes and keypads should be cleared.
  2. If you have a MyQ accessory, then you will need to wait 3 seconds after the light goes off and then push the button again for 6 seconds. When the light goes off, it should clear out the programming.

Once you have cleared the old devices, you can program the new ones or re-program the old ones. To do that, push the button one time and make sure the light comes on. It should stay on for no more than 2 minutes.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
