What is the Garage Door Opener Limit Switch?
This switch tells your door how far to open and how far to close. Otherwise, it wouldn’t know when to stop working. It can also be the reason your door starts to close but reverses. When this safety mechanism gets out of whack, it can cause your door to go crazy.
How to Know if the Up or Down Limit Switch Needs to Be Adjusted
There is more than one switch on your door. The up switch determines how far the door opens. The down switch determines how far it goes down. Obviously, if your door won’t open all the way, the up switch is the culprit. If there’s a gap at the bottom when you shut your door, the down switch needs to be adjusted.
How to Adjust the Limit Switch on Your Opener
If you have determined that the limit switch is the culprit for your door acting erratic, these are the steps you need to take to adjust it.
1. Measure Where the Door Stops
You will need to take a measurement of your door to make the adjustment. If the up switch needs to be adjusted, go ahead and open your garage door. Use a measuring tape to measure from the ground to the bottom of the door.
If your down switch is the problem, you will need to shut the door. Use your tape measure to find out how big the gap is at the bottom. Make a note of the measurement.
2. Locate the Limit Switch On Your Opener
To get to the limit switch, you will need a ladder tall enough for you to reach the opener. The switches are usually located on the side of the opener motor housing. If you aren’t sure exactly where it is on your model, look at your owner’s manual for a diagram.
3. Turn The Limit Screw to Adjust
You will need to turn the down limit screw counterclockwise to adjust the closing of the door and the up limit screw clockwise to adjust the opening of the door. For every three inches off, you will turn the screw one turn in the direction you need to go.
We recommend that you test how far down your door is going up or coming down every turn to see where it stops. You may have to turn it back a bit if it is going too far.
