How Important Are Garage Door Inspections?

When is the last time you had your garage door inspected for safety? If you are like most homeowners, the answer is probably never. Having your garage door inspected is important to your family’s safety. The technicians here at Garage Door Repair of Riverside can inspect your door to make sure everything is working the right way.

Here are the things we do during our inspections.

1. Check The Reversing Mechanism

Reversing mechanisms on garage doors were mandated in 1982. If your unit is older then that, it doesn’t have this safety feature. What this means, is if your door comes in contact with an object, it should automatically reverse.

In order to see if your door has this mechanism, we will test the function. It is done by placing a block or other object in the path of the door. If the door doesn’t automatically reverse, our technicians will push the button to open the door right away to avoid damaging your equipment.

2. Check or Install Safety Sensors

If your door doesn’t automatically reverse, our technicians will install safety sensors. These sensors are installed on either side of the doorway about five inches off of the ground. When something breaks the signal, the door will automatically reverse.

For homeowners that have sensors, our technicians will test them to make sure they are working. The sensors are designed to keep a door from closing at all if the signal is interrupted. That can actually be one of the reasons you can’t get your door to close. If you have these sensors and they are dirty or out of alignment, it can break the signal.

3. Visually Inspect All Parts

Another part of our safety inspection includes visually inspecting all of the parts on your garage. Any of the parts can cause your door to stop working. The part we are most worried about are the springs. This is especially true if you have torsion springs.

Both torsion and extension springs hold tension on the door. If the tension is broken, it can cause the door to fall. Also, torsion springs can snap and go flying in your garage. Both of these scenarios are dangerous to your family.

4. Add Warning Labels

Your door should come with warning labels when it is installed. However, the labels can wear out or fall off over time. Our techs will replace those labels so that you and your family knows the potential dangers of using your door.

5. Check the Emergency Release Handle

If you do not have an emergency release handle, our techs will install one for you. If you do have one, they will measure the distance from the floor to the handle. The handle must be no more than six feet from the floor.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
