Give Your Garage Door a Faux Wood Look

Did you know that making sure your garage door is up to date can add value to your property value? Anytime you invest in the exterior or interior of your home, it will cause it’s value to rise. Here at Neighborhood Garage Door Services of Sacramento, CA has a few DIY ideas that you can do to makeover your garage door.

Create a Faux Wood Look

You can make a faux wood look to enhance the design. This makeover will only take a few hours to achieve and give you an incredible door when you are done.

Materials you need:

  • Basecoat paint- this can be a primer that will even out discolorations on your existing door. Also, if you have a door that is already dark, this will allow it to look more like wood in the end.
  • Flat exterior paint- go with a burnt orange or a caramel color for part of the project, and then you’ll need a dark chocolate brown as an accent.
  • Gloves- keep your hands clean
  • Rags- to wipe up the excess paint. Old t-shirts can work well for this part of the job.
  • Paint brush- use a brush that is wide for the general strokes. You may need an edging brush if you are painting around windows.

Look For Manufacturers Instructions

Take a look on the back of your door to see what the manufacturer suggests for painting on your garage door. There should be some guidance on the prep work that needs to be done ahead of time.

If you do not have that information, then you need to be sure that the door is completely dirt free. Wash it down with a soft cloth and soap. Then you can use a hose to rinse it off.

Tape Off Windows

For doors that have windows, use painter’s tape to tape it off. It is best to not get paint all over your windows. This will leave you with less cleanup and less likely to get paint on a surface that you didn’t intend.

Paint The Door With Burnt Orange

If you feel that you need a primer, then go ahead and paint the entire overhead door with that color. This will give you an even color to start with.

Once the bottom coat has dried, use the burnt orange or caramel color that you purchased to paint the entire door. Sure, it is going to look orange, but it won’t stay that way for long.

Paint the Door With Brown Glaze

You can either purchase a brown glaze from the store, or you can make your own. For this part of the project, you’ll need to work in smaller sections. Just paint one panel at a time.

tablespoon to mix glaze for your faux wood look

Make Your Own Glaze

To make a glaze, take about 2 cups and add in 2 tablespoons of water. Mix the water and paint up very well.

The consistency of the paint should be that of milk. If it is too runny, add a bit more paint, if it is too thick, a little more water. The goal here is that you want to have the drying time to be a little longer.

Use a T-Shirt to Wipe Across The Brown Glaze

Take the t-shirt rag and wipe lightly wipe off the glaze. This will take off some of the brown and allow the orange to peak through, leaving you with more of a woodgrain look. Allow it to cure for a few days.

add rustic hardware for a faux wood look on your garage door

Add Rustic Hardware

If you are going for a more rustic look, you can add on carriage style handles and brackets. This will add to the look of your wooden door. The hardware doesn’t have to be functional, rather just for the style.

With this upgrade, your home will look brand new. If your door is not able to be painted for some reason, and you are ready for a change, call Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Sacramento today.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
