If you don’t have a keypad on the outside of your garage, then the garage door remote is the only way to get your door to open from the outside. Keeping up with your garage door remote is already a pain enough, but what about when they break? There are a few things you can do to try and fix it.
Is it In Range Of The IR Signal?
Every remotes sends an infrared or IR signal to the receiver inside of the garage door opener. If it is going to work, it has to be within range. Each remote will have a different range depending on the factors such as the remote itself, battery life, and more. Start by getting right on top of the door to see if it works.
Are The Batteries Strong Enough?
Even if the batteries are not completely dead, they may be dying. If that is the case, it can cause the remote to work intermittently, or not at all. Start out by getting new batteries and replacing them.
*We do not suggest you use rechargeable batteries on this type of electronic, because it needs to draw too much power to get the proper range.
Are The Battery Contacts Working?
If you have changed the battery and it is still not working, it could be the contacts on the remote itself. Look for rust, corrosion or anything that may keep the connection from being good. Scrape off the connectors with a steel wool pad or fine sandpaper. Do not use water.
Have You Reset Your System?
Just like restarting your computer or phone can fix certain problems, the same thing is true with your garage door system. You can give it a reboot to see if it will reset itself.
To reset the remote you will need to:
- Take the batteries out of the remote for 30 seconds to a minute
- Place the batteries back in the remote
- Test to see if it is working
To reset the receiver you will:
- Unplug the receiver (it is usually plugged into an outlet on the ceiling)
- Let the receiver sit for 30 seconds to a minute
- Plug back in the receiver
- Test to see if it is working
You should reset both to see if either will work to make it work for you.
Did You Clean The Eyes?
There are eyes that are on both the remote control and on the receiving unit. The eye is what allows the IR signal to go from the transmitter to the receiver. In order to make sure that signal can go between the two, you can wipe off the sensors with a soft cloth.
Sometimes, the IR eye on the remote can become too badly damaged for it to be cleaned. If that is the case, then you will need to have it replaced.
