Fix Your Noisy Garage Door

Neighborhood Garage Service of Columbus, Ohio knows that If your garage door is noisy, then it’s not going to just wear on your nerves. It will also wear on the lifespan of your garage door. A noisy garage door is a sign that maintenance should be prepared to help prevent any future problems. Luckily it is a very simple and low cost fix.

Choosing the Right Lubrication

Your garage door has many moving parts. When these parts are not properly lubricated, it can cause your overhead door to move slowly and sound very noisy while opening and closing. Not only does it cause an obnoxious noise, but it could ultimately be damaging your overhead door. This is why properly lubricating all of its moving parts on a regular basis is very important.

Choosing the right type of lubrication is important. It is recommended that you choose a dry lubricant. If you choose a lubricant that is greasy, it will collect bits of dust and dirt. Over time those bits of dirt in the grease will harden, causing the lubricant to become cement-like. This can be very detrimental to your garage door.

Lubricate all Moving Parts

When lubricating the moving parts of your garage door, you can start with all of the hinges. Then check the bearings in the track. Some tracks are sealed, so in this case you will not be able to reach the bearings, but if your track is unsealed, you can lubricate the bearings there as well.

Along the top sides of your garage door, there are springs that tighten and loosen as your garage door opens and closes. These are called Torsion springs. Spraying your lubricant along the tops of the springs will allow it to seep into the springs as they open or close.

At the top of your garage door you will find a track that rests on the shuttle. There is no need to lubricate the shuttle itself, but the track that glides in and out of the shuttle should be sprayed. At the end of the shuttle there is a pulley that you should spray as well.

Finally, take a look at your track, and spray any areas along the bottom that may need to be sprayed. Sometimes the track can pinch in certain areas so it’s good to help it along with a bit of lubricant when necessary.

The chains are usually already coated with a special coating to protect it. Usually it is not necessary to lubricate those again unless it seems like it really needs it.

Check for Loose or Broken Nuts and Bolts

broken bolts can cause a noisy garage door

Sometimes a noisy garage door can be due to a broken or loose bolt. When these bolts are not properly in place, it causes your garage door to not be secured properly. When your overhead door is not secured properly, it can cause it to rattle a lot which can be very noisy while opening and closing.

When you are lubricating all of the moving parts of your garage door, it’s a good idea to inspect all of your bearings to check for any loose or broken nuts and bolts. If you need assistance with repairing these parts, it’s best to hire a professional so you know the job gets done right.

If you keep up with these two easy steps, it will not only lengthen the life of your garage door, but also keep it much quieter. Keeping up with proper maintenance on your garage door on a regular basis will keep everything running nice and smooth for many years to come.

If you are ever in need of assistance with your garage door maintenance, or need any recommendations on the proper lubricant to use, please call Neighborhood Garage Door Service in Columbus. We are always here to help you with your overhead door needs.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
