We’ve had our customers be victims to garage door repair scams from dishonest people. Maybe they saw an advertisement on the side of the road or on the NextDoor App. They call the person to come out and end up being taken for a ride. Here are our suggestions to avoid scams from garage door companies.
1. Ask Others For Recommendations
It is always a good idea to ask around and see other people’s experience with a company before you hire them on. It’s possible that a friend or family member can give you a reference of someone they’ve done business with. Ask them detailed questions about their experience so you know what to expect.
2. Look At Their Website
If the company doesn’t have a website at all, then you might want to pass. Not all, but many legit businesses invest in a website and social media accounts. Fly by night companies will typically avoid putting together a site.
3. Check Out Their Reviews on Authority Platforms
You can find reviews of a business on Facebook, Google, and Yelp to name a few. Don’t base your idea of the company off of the reviews you see listed on their website. If these reviews are real at all, they won’t highlight negative comments on their site.
Go to their Facebook page, search them out on Yelp, or Google them to find real customer reviews. If you do not see any at all, then they are probably not a real business.
4. Price Check With Other Companies
Before you select a garage door company, you should call a few different ones to get general price quotes for the work you need done. This will help you know what a fair price is for the work. Let the tech know you’ve been price checking the service and ask what they estimate the cost to be. This will let them know you are educated and can’t be scammed by them.
5. Beware If They Ask You To Pay In Cash
There always needs to be a paper trail for the work you have done to your house. If a company insists that you pay in cash, then don’t trust them. You should receive a work order and have the ability to pay via credit card at least. Not all companies take checks anymore as a safety precaution for themselves, but all should take one or the other.
You should receive a receipt of your transaction after the work is done. Also, you should be able to contact the company if there are any problems with the work and receive a solution.
