A Simple Test to Determine if Your Garage Door is Insulated

An insulated garage door is very beneficial to your garage, especially if it is attached to your house. The colder your garage, the more cold or hot air you will let in when coming from outside. It won’t be any different than opening your front door if the garage is not insulated.

There is a simple test to determine if your door is insulated:

1. Conduct The Test First Thing In The Morning

It is best to conduct this test first thing in the morning since the door has been closed for several hours. If your door has recently been opened, then it will cause the temperature in the garage to change. So, to get a better idea if your door is insulating the garage, you should start out in the morning.

2. Start Your Car

If your car has a temperature gauge that displays on the dash, then this test will be simple to do. Go ahead and start your car and let it run for a minute so the temperature will display. If you have a car that doesn’t show you the temp, then you can put a thermostat or weather thermometer in the garage.

3. Test The Air Outside

Once you know the temperature on the inside of your garage, it’s time to test the air outside. After you drive for a few minutes of driving, see what temperature is displayed on the dash. If you have a weather thermometer, you can park somewhere outside and set it on your car to get a temperature reading.

If your garage door is insulating your home, there should be a difference in the temperature that you saw inside of the garage versus outside. If there isn’t much of a difference, then you can bet that the door isn’t doing a good job.

How to Insulate Your Garage Door

After you determine if the door is insulating the garage, then you can figure out what needs to be done. It’s a good idea to try and regulate the temps in your outbuildings and garage. The best way to do this is to insulate the door.

Here’s what you need to do:

Replace The Weather Stripping

Go ahead and replace the stripping all the way around the assembly. Since this is made from rubber, it can become cracked and dry. Our technicians can make this new installation if you need us to.

Add Insulation to The Door

You can purchase insulation kits and reinforce the door with insulated panels. If your door is in good shape, this can be a good alternative. However, if there is damage, rust, holes, or any other concerns with the system, you might want to replace the entire thing.

Our techs can do the installation of insulation or a new door if you want them to. They will give you an honest opinion of what your best options are.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
