How to Paint a Garage Door

Neighborhood Garage Door Services of Toledo, Ohio encourages the for proper care and appearance upkeep when it comes to garage doors.  One way to be sure your door looks its best is to consider a fresh paint job.
Homes and garages require paint not only for the overall look but it serves as protection from dirt, sunlight and inclement weather.  When your garage door begins to fade and looked damaged, then it is time to paint, which will extend the life of your door.
While painting your garage door yourself is not difficult, you’ll want to be sure to follow the steps outlined below. This is a simple garage door repair that you can make on you own.

1. Gather Materials Needed

Painting Supplies For Garage Door
You’ll need to be sure you have the necessary materials to begin your garage door project.
Collect the following items:

  • Exterior paint
  • 3-inch paint brush
  • Stir stick
  • Sponge and cleaning materials
  • Rags
  • Drop cloth
  • Step stool

2. Planning and weather conditions

Before you begin to paint your door, be sure that the weather is appropriate.  In other words, don’t paint it when the door gets the most direct sunlight.  Also, be sure to check the weather and paint when you won’t be expecting rain for a few days.  You’ll need time for the door to dry.

3. Clean the door

While this may sound simple or trivial, don’t skip this step.  Your door needs a thorough cleaning to ensure a smoother finished paint job for your garage door.  One option is to buy a cleaner made for garage doors.
However, Neighborhood Garage Door Services of Toledo thinks soapy, warm water and a sponge works great.  Pay particular attention to the bottom of the garage door where dirt and grime accumulates most.  Let the garage door dry completely before you apply any paint.

4. Tape areas off

You want to be careful to only paint the door.  Tape off any areas that you want to protect and avoid.  Also, a drop cloth is helpful to protect your driveway from paint making a mess and will make the cleanup go more quickly.
You can use a brush to get to hard to reach corners and areas.  Having certain sections taped off will enable you to be more accurate as you paint and make less of a mess.

5. Paint the door

You may want to prime the door to be sure that the old color doesn’t show through.  This will also help the paint job to have a smoother look.  This step isn’t required but may help with the finished product.
Start with a roller and begin to apply the paint onto your garage door.  Try to be consistent as you roll so that it will look even.  If you miss any spots, then go use the paint brush to ensure every bit of the door gets that fresh coat of paint.
Neighborhood Garage Door Services of Toledo, Ohio is available to answer your questions, service your garage door or provide you with a new install.  Further, we are known for customer service and would be happy to coach you as you prepare to paint your garage door. Be sure to follow the 5 steps to paint your door and you’ll find that it’s a fairly simple and affordable at home project to accomplish.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
