Insulating your garage is a good idea if you plan to add heat or air conditioning to the area. There are several materials to choose from for the walls, ceiling and door. Our team at Garage Door Company of Raleigh will be happy to go over the 4 different types of garage door insulation that are on the market.

1. Fiberglass Batt Insulation

The most commonly used type of insulation for garages is fiberglass. This insulation can be bought in rolls or pre-cut batts that are usually backed with foil or paper which act as a vapor barrier. It fits between the wall studs and ceiling joists of your garage for easy installation.
If you are on a tight budget fiberglass insulation is the most affordable. It is also the easiest to install.

2. Rigid Foam Insulation

This insulation comes in large sheets and is usually made from a similar material to Styrofoam called polystyrene. Rigid foam provides a high insulating per inch of thickness making it great for thin walls. It is also easily cut to fit any space.
If you are considering this insulation option make sure to check the fire rating. You want to verify the type you choose is fire-resistant.

3. Spray Foam Insulation

Spray Foam Insulation is more expensive than the other types of insulation. It is sprayed with a gun that releases two different materials at once. The foam is formed when the two materials meet. It is very strong, gets into small spaces and can reduce moisture as well as minimize noise.

  • Closed Cell Foam- The cells are close together and contain a gas to help it get larger and insulate. Closed cell foam is also stronger than open cell and has a higher R-value of the two types.
  • Open Cell Foam- This type is less dense than the open cell. It cost less but requires a thicker layer since the R-value is lower per inch.

There are pros and cons to both of these options. If you need professional help deciding to give us a call.

4. Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose insulation is made from mostly recycled newspapers. It is treated with a chemical to make it flame retardant and helps discourage rodents. This insulation is growing in popularity and environmentally friendly.
This type of insulation is blown into the walls and ceiling with a blowing machine. Since it is a loose material this type of insulation can only be used in finished walls and ceilings.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
